At RILiveMusic, we’re always excited to spotlight major shifts in Rhode Island’s music landscape — and this one is big. Beginning in 2026, the UNITED Theatre will officially take the reins of programming at the legendary Knickerbocker Music Center, ushering in an exciting new era for the 91-year-old institution at 35 Railroad Avenue.
For generations, the Knick has been a cornerstone of Westerly’s vibrant music scene — a stage where blues, swing, rock, and homegrown Rhode Island talent have thrived. Now, under the UNITED’s leadership, the venue is poised to evolve into a full-fledged Music Lab dedicated to education, performance, and artist development, all while honoring the deep roots that make the Knick such a cherished local landmark.
A Partnership Years in the Making
The UNITED and the Knick aren’t strangers — in fact, they’ve been collaborating for more than seven years. Their partnership hit new heights in 2020, when the UNITED Music School began offering private lessons, ensemble rehearsals, masterclasses, summer camps, and its popular Youth-on-the-Mic series at the Knick. Thousands of young musicians have already had the chance to learn and perform on its historic stage.
“The Knick is more than a venue, it’s a cornerstone of our cultural campus and an essential piece of Rhode Island’s musical story,” said Tony Nunes, Artistic Director of the UNITED Theatre. “This next chapter ensures that its history continues to be written for many years to come by the emerging artists who will define the future of music in our region.”
What’s Coming in 2026: A Creative Hub for All Ages
Under the UNITED’s new operating model, the Knick will be transformed into a dynamic music-centered space with programming designed to engage musicians and music lovers of all ages. Expect:
- Curated local and regional live performances
- Monthly dance nights
- Teen music nights
- Youth and community open mics
- UNITED Music School lessons and ensemble performances
- Community rentals and collaborations
- A new artist residency program, including talent brought in through the UNITED’s Nashville North initiative
New programs centered on recording, audio production, and musician development are also slated for announcement later in 2026.
Preserving History While Building the Future
While programming evolves, the Knick’s historic character will remain central. The building will shift away from bar and restaurant operations to better support youth and educational activities. The Tap Room will close, though select events will feature pop-up food and beverage options curated with local partners.
Inside, visitors will see expanded efforts to honor Westerly’s musical heritage, with artifacts and historic pieces on display throughout the space.
A Pause Before the Relaunch
Public programming at the Knick has been on pause since November 1, 2025, as the building undergoes long-planned renovations — including a major roof replacement. UNITED’s music lessons and student-focused events will continue uninterrupted during this period.
Full public programming returns March 2026, officially launching this new era under the UNITED banner.
