Founded in 2016 by Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame inductee Mark Cutler, The Same Thing Project is a “free community songwriting workshop” for people from all walks of life regardless of music experience.
Each Tuesday morning at 10:00AM, musicians, artists, students, teachers, retired folks, differently-abled, blue and white-collar workers get together at Outsider Collective in Pawtucket, RI to write a song.
The Same Thing Project also takes place at schools, adult care facilities, community centers and now at college campuses for a tour titled Community Songwriting for Mental Health. This first-of-its-kind college tour has been developed with support from the National Museum of Mental Health Project (NMMHP) as a means of addressing the mental health challenges being faced by today’s college students.
The Same Thing Project is one of the first organizations in the United States dedicated to community songwriting, which it defines as “discovering one’s voice, alongside others, to create words and music for shared experiences and emotions—everyone becomes a songwriter. No music experience required”.
The Same Thing Project’s Free Summer Songwriting Series brings the workshops to community parks and various venues throughout Rhode Island (see below). As with the Tuesday weekly series, these workshops are open to all individuals. No prior musical knowledge is required, and participation is free of charge.
The Free Summer Songwriting Workshops are made possible through the generous support of numerous community members. A GoFundMe campaign is currently active to support the 2025 summer workshop series, donations can be made HERE
